***** File SPECT.TXT

The following errata are reported for the Spectroscopy and Spectrophotometry
Network (or Discipline) of the IHW:

- The data from this discipline lack consistency in some areas, which has
resulted in errors detected at the IHW Lead Center (see below).

- Be aware that the value zero is frequently used to indicate "value not
given". When it comes to (e.g.) Exposure-Integration times, it is clear
that the value zero indicates "value not given", but when it comes to (e.g.)
Position Angles, the value zero can both be a valid angle and an indication
that the "value (is) not given".

- The COMMENT ADD. OBS. keyword is another example of the inconsistency. The
number of spaces between COMMENT and ADD. OBS. varies from one space to
  three spaces.

- The calibration files are usually indicated by an OBJECT value not equal to
'P/HALLEY'. When it comes to the IUE data, this is not always the case,
though (the value of the SEPNUC keyword is often used to indicate whether a
file is a calibration for the IUE data or not, while the OBJECT keyword may
or may not have the value 'P/HALLEY'). Furthermore, when the OBJECT keyword
is used to indicate calibrations, the values are inconsistent and sometimes
not following the rules of the FITS format. According to FITS, the value
field of the FITS keyword can not contain lower case characters. The SSN
discipline frequently uses (e.g.) OBJECT = 'He Ne Ar ARC'. In other files
this information is given all in upper case, sometimes with spaces between
the chemical elements, sometimes without, and sometimes with hyphens between
them. Another example of the inconsistency is OBJECT = 'HD25680 ' versus
OBJECT = 'HD 25680'. Examples of errors are OBJECT = 'CHI 1 ORIONOS'
(correct value is 'CHI 1 ORIONIS') and OBJECT = 'VAN BEUREN 64' (correct
value is 'VAN BUEREN 64'). One object is given as '29 PI LEO' which
  probably should be 'PI LEONIS'.

- In a total of 242 files the APERSIZE value is '10 X 20.3 LAp '. Again,
lower case characters are not allowed in FITS value fields.

- According to the FITS format, when the value of a keyword is a character
string, the closing quote can not occur before column 20 (i.e., if the
string is shorter than eight characters long, it must be blank padded to a
minimum length of eight characters. There are numerous examples where the
closing quote occurs before column 20 in the SSN files, e.g., QUALITY =
  'UNKNOWN', RESOL-SP= '12 ', BUNIT = 'FLAMBDA', QUALITY = 'GOOD', etc.

- The TIME-OBS value is given in a rather unusual way (at least for IHW data)
in a total of 41 files. An example is TIME-OBS= 8.05556E-02. (The
directives from the Lead Center mandated that the TIME-OBS value should be
given with one to five decimals, where the number of decimals in a
particular file should not exceed the number of significant decimals.)

- There are numerous errors and inconsistencies in the names of observers (as
  well as submitters of data):

- There are over 100 files that have suspect offsets, e.g., SEPNUC = 0.0,
  while ORIENT = 90.0.

- There are 36 files that have CTYPE1 = 'LAMBDA ', which according to
standard FITS indicates wavelength in meter. The common value in the SSN
data is 'LAMBDAA ', which indicates wavelength in Angstrom. It is not
clear which of these values would be correct in these 36 files.

- The additional observers are given as COMMENT ADD. OBS. EVANS,A'GILMOZZI,R
in 29 files. Correct value is COMMENT ADD. OBS. EVANS,A/GILMOZZI,R.

- The value of the keyword EXPOSURE= 221000.00000 in the file with FILE-NUM=
701381. In a COMMENT in the same file, it is incorrectly stated that the
  integration time is 2210000 (seconds).
